Band with Mr. Cosby
5th & 6th Grade Beginning Band
A website for band students and their families at Fullerton, Harrison, Prairie Wind, Saddlebrook and Standing Bear Elementary Schools.
How to Use This Website
The purpose of this website is to provide information to my beginning band students and their families so they can improve on their own at home, in between the band classes we have during the school day. Follow the steps below to use this website:
1. Using the menu (three horizontal lines), click or tap on your school's unique webpage.
2. Each school's webpage is password protected. Use the password I have given you to log in to your school's webpage.
3. After logging in, you can view the band class schedule/calendar (top of page), the "band homework" that each student should be working on at home (this should take about 10-15 minutes to complete), and useful videos that will help you learn the basics on your instrument faster (bottom of page).
4. It is a smart idea to use your school's webpage to help you improve at home. Not sure where to start or what to do? Just follow the step-by-step instructions under the "band homework" tab! Feel free to reach out to me at any time if you still have questions- my contact information is at the bottom of this page and at the bottom of each school's webpage too.
Beginning Band
Student Expectations
Elementary band students are expected to bring the following to class with them: school ipad (we won't use it every band class, but bring it any way), instrument, method book (Sound Innovations, Book 1), music folder (each student has one), and a pencil (just put one in your instrument case so you will have it with you when you come to band).
Also, all band students are expected to treat each other with KINDNESS and RESPECT at all times... learning to play an instrument can be an intimidating task, but students should know that making mistakes in band class shows that you are learning! I don't mind mistakes at all- mistakes give me as a band teacher information that will help me help you learn better and faster.
Lastly, as your band teacher, you can expect that I will support ALL students who want to learn to play- there is a place for everyone in beginning band! Some students have previous music experience or just remarkable natural ability on a band instrument and they will make tremendous progress on their own. There are also students who find learning a band instrument to be a challenge and this is okay- just because it is hard does NOT mean it isn't worth doing or bad for you in the long run! My job as a band teacher is to help each and every student get better- my goal is NOT to turn you all into professional musicians, but to provide the musical skills necessary for you to continue playing and participating in band throughout high school and beyond. So my last expectation for my band students is for you to KEEP TRYING, even if it is difficult for you. I ask that all band students try to get better each day they come to band class- this will no doubt result in some amazing performances when it comes time for concerts and programs!
